Telehealth Consultations

Clinical psychology consultations from the privacy and convenience of your own location, available for suitable clients across Western Australia.

In Person or Online

Psychological care without needing to travel to Fremantle

I offer telehealth consultations for clients for whom online psychological assessment or therapy is clinically appropriate. This can be particularly useful for people living outside the Fremantle area, people whose work or family commitments make travel difficult, and those who simply find an online consultation more convenient.

Telehealth does not change the fundamental nature of the therapeutic work. We still meet at an agreed time, talk privately and work collaboratively to understand the difficulties that have brought you to therapy and what may be helpful.

For many forms of psychological therapy, video consultation can provide a practical alternative to meeting in person. Whether telehealth is suitable depends on the individual, the clinical issues involved and the circumstances in which the sessions will take place.

Who It May Suit

When telehealth can work well

Telehealth may be a useful option if you live some distance from Fremantle, have mobility or transport difficulties, travel frequently, have demanding work or caring responsibilities, or prefer the convenience of attending from home or another private location.

It can also provide continuity when an established client is temporarily unable to attend the Fremantle practice.

Telehealth is not necessarily the best option in every situation. If there are clinical, privacy, safety or practical reasons why an online consultation would not be appropriate, we can discuss whether in-person care or another service would be preferable.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Making telehealth private and effective

A telehealth consultation works best when you can give it much the same protected time and privacy that you would give an appointment at the Fremantle practice.

  • Choose a quiet, private place where you can speak freely without being overheard.
  • Use a reliable internet connection and a device with working video, microphone and speakers.
  • Allow enough uninterrupted time before and after the consultation.
  • Where possible, use headphones if they improve privacy or audio quality.
  • Avoid joining a session while driving or from another situation where your attention is divided.

At the beginning of a telehealth consultation I may confirm your current location and appropriate contact information. This is particularly important so that suitable arrangements can be made should an unexpected safety or technical issue arise during the session.

Medicare & Referrals

Medicare-funded telehealth

Eligible clients can access individual telehealth psychological treatment services under the Australian Government's Better Access initiative where the relevant Medicare and referral requirements are met.

Better Access currently provides eligible patients with Medicare benefits for up to 10 individual mental health treatment services per calendar year. Those services may be provided face-to-face or by telehealth, subject to the applicable requirements.

If you intend to claim a Medicare rebate, please ensure that the appropriate referral arrangements are in place. Further information is available on the FreoPsych Fees & Referrals page.

Technology & Confidentiality

A professional consultation in an online setting

Telehealth introduces some practical considerations that do not arise in quite the same way during an in-person appointment. These include the privacy of your surroundings, the security and reliability of the technology being used, and what we do if the connection is unexpectedly interrupted.

These matters can be discussed when telehealth is arranged. Clinical notes are maintained as they are for in-person psychological services; a telehealth consultation does not need to be recorded in order for psychological care to be provided.

If the video connection fails: we can attempt to reconnect and, where clinically and practically appropriate, use an agreed alternative such as telephone contact.
