Assessment, Formulation & Treatment
Understanding what is happening before deciding how to work
Effective psychological care begins with understanding the person and the problem in context. Assessment is therefore not something separate from therapy. It helps clarify what may have contributed to the difficulty, what may now be maintaining it, how it is affecting everyday life, and what kinds of intervention are most likely to be useful.
Sometimes the clinical picture is relatively clear. At other times several difficulties overlap — anxiety with chronic pain, trauma with relationship strain, workplace stress with sleep problems, or attention and executive-functioning concerns with longstanding difficulties in organisation, mood or self-confidence.
My approach is collaborative and evidence-based, but also broad enough to recognise that people do not always fit neatly into a single diagnosis or therapeutic model. Treatment is adapted to the individual rather than applying one method to every person.
